Revonte in Eurobike 2022

Eurobike is the premier show that connects professionals in the bicycle industry across the globe! The 2022 edition was a special one for several reasons, one of them being that for the very first time the show was held in Frankfurt. We took part, of course. Read further to see what went down during the show, and what’s to come!

A Strong Presence

We had a booth booked in Hall 8 which turned out to be the central location when it came to e-bike drive system manufacturers. On top of that, numerous manufacturers specializing in batteries, remote controllers as well as full e-bikes had their booths located in the very same hall.

Besides having a stand showcasing our drive system, and bikes from our close partners we also sported an outside booth conveniently located along the test ride route. The booth acted as the base of our test bike fleet.

In Partnership

Just as in the previous years, the Eurobike Show was a joint venture. We had bikes on display from our partners such as Lavelle bikes, the Italian powerhouse MV Agusta, and Ouca bikes – a new and rapidly growing cargo e-bike manufacturer from Finland.

Every single one of the bikes on our stand could have been the guiding star of the show! The P2 from Lavelle bikes with its futuristic design and immaculate carbon craftsmanship had eyes locked into it throughout the week. The very same can be said about the courageous and stealth-looking gravel ebike from the prestigious Italian motorbike manufacturer MV Agusta. It is worth noting that both these bikes employed a single-sided asymmetric rear triangle and a Gates carbon belt drive.

Last, but certainly not least was the Ouca Transport cargo e-bike with its distinctive, but first of all practical design. Ouca Bikes have designed its lineup for heavy-duty use while still maintaining the light, and even effortless ride feel. “Smooth, strong, stable”, as it says on the label!

Looking Forward

Meetings were had, new acquaintances made, exciting plans drawn, and plenty of test ride kilometres ridden! The feedback from test rides was overwhelmingly positive, and more often than not, the riders who swung their leg over one of our test bikes were impressed. This is a testament that’s been said for a while now; the ride experience provided by the Revonte ONE Drive System needs to be experienced first-hand.

Most importantly, the feedback was the same no matter what type of bike was ridden. The Ouca Bikes test bike received just as good if not better feedback – some of it from very notable players in the field of cargo e-bikes.

The Eurobike 2022 was a big success for us on all fronts! Thanks to the partnership with hGears we are able to ramp up full-scale production soon and start delivering drive systems to our partners.

Stay tuned for more. Big things are in the works.

2021 in Review

Time flies as they say. This is especially true when developing an innovative product such as the Revonte ONE Drive System. A brief summary was in order to bring 2021 to closure, Read further to learn what happened, and even more importantly, what’s going to happen in 2022!

Development and Testing

It goes without saying that 2021 was extremely dense and condensed when it comes to developing, and refining the Revonte ONE Drive System further, and further. Testing the results of the development work, whether it be hardware or software related, was another side of the coin that produced nearly an equal workload than the development itself. All this is done to ensure the unprecedented ride experience and performance when the Revonte ONE Drive system is released to the market.

Suffice to say, the global economic environment did not make things easier with continuously growing lead times, components, and material shortages. We did navigate the challenging circumstances well, but it did not come without a considerable amount of work in the back end.

The advent of Cargo e-bikes

We’ve said it previously, but it is worth repeating: cargo e-bikes are going to form a big part of the e-bike market in the future. The utility value of an e-bike that can carry a decent payload can hardly be overstated, in commercial as well as in personal settings.

We’ve partnered with EAV which is the leading company on this front with its forward-thinking approach to design and ability. We are especially excited for the future developments in this field and will keep the collaboration as strong as ever.

Media Presence

We’ve been pleased to see that features about us have appeared in the cycling media throughout the year. One very notable landmark in the media coverage category was an article published in the prestigious Forbes magazine that got published in April of 2021.

While we are at it and speaking of media coverage, head to Revonte.com/Company to see the full list of news and media coverage that’s been published to this date!

For the technically-minded and curious, we also lifted the curtain of secrecy by presenting a video showing how the Revone ONE Drive Unit works.

Eurobike

Eurobike is the premier annual event for the bicycle industry. The 2020 edition got cancelled because of the global pandemic, but fortunately, a year later, the show was back in nearly full swing – and, of course, we were there.

The show was a success by all metrics. Media presence and exposure were gained, interesting discussions were had, and important negotiations were made. Without an exception, every visitor on our stand was excited and impressed about the automatic & stepless transmission found on the Revonte ONE Drive System.

E-bikes equipped with the Revonte ONE Drive System are a category-breaker and will change how e-bikes are ridden and even thought of.

Moving Forward!

This year will be exciting, and a decisive time period in many ways. The demand for e-bikes is higher than ever and just keeps increasing. The demand for a new drive system and drivetrain technology that is user-friendly, low maintenance, and easy to use is up there as well. We are going to answer that call.

Stay tuned for future news. Big things are coming up in 2022!

Eurobike 2021 Wrap-Up and Moving Forward

Eurobike is the premier annual show which showcases the new products for the upcoming year as well as showcasing new technologies and developments which are about to be employed in the market in the near future. In short, the annual show organized in Friedrichschafen Germany shows who’s who by calling every major player to show their hand for the upcoming year.

Making an Impact

Eurobike was a big midterm goal for us. First, we wanted to present all the hard work and development that has gone into the Revonte ONE Drive System since our last appearance in the show in 2019. Back then, we did not have a rideable prototype with us – something that was going to change for 2021.

The testing and development have been ongoing and even fierce. At any given time we’ve had rideable prototypes around the office, but we wanted to make sure that the version that was coming with us to Eurobike would be pristine in its performance. The current supply chain issues and material shortages have not played any favours on this front, but we made it happen.

It goes without saying that there was no shortage in demand when it came to test ride slots. There were almost no idle moments when the bike was on the move, whether ridden by our future potential customers or media personnel.

In Partnership

We partnered with our longtime collaborators EAV and Lavelle bikes to have a strong presence in the show. Our booth stood out with its central location, ample footprint, and timeless black and white color theme. The bikes from EAV and Lavelle were the icing on the cake, displaying the versatility of the Revonte ONE Drive System.

The futuristic and highly refined model from Lavelle Bikes was an eye-catcher to say the least. The shapes and highly engineered carbon lay-ups of the frame are a work of art by themselves as is the asymmetrical design which is enabled by the Revonte ONE Drive System.

The EAV 2Cubed cargo e-bike had just as strong of a stand in the show. Leo from EAV had no dull moment during the entire four days of the show in describing the features of the vehicle and the design philosophy behind it.

Moving Forward

Eurobike produced more than anticipated interest towards the Revonte ONE Drive System. When it comes to e-bike drive systems, combining the motor and the transmission all in one enclosed unit is the way of the future, and has been our solution from the start.

Currently, we are finalizing the mechanical design, testing, and stress-proofing the production methods and moving into the production phase in 2022. The start will be done on a smaller scale to ensure the highest level of quality control. Once the production processes have been verified and thoroughly tested, we’ll be moving into mass production in the 2nd stage.

Bikes equipped with the Revonte ONE Drive System will be available in 2022. If you want to be among the first lucky ones enjoying the automatic & stepless operation of our drive system, stay tuned for future updates on specific bike models.

In case your German language skills are a bit out of touch, a translated version provided by Google can be read here. A summary of the test ride is found below.

“The full assistance mode topped it off so that there was an abundance of power available! You notice this when you accelerate quickly, which happens still really quietly. Only the gear changes were a bit rougher, but this will be brought to an optimal level in the course of the development of Revonte.

Overall, the system has already made a good impression on us and we can expect a unique drive system for the series variant, which does not have any susceptible derailleur gears.”

2020 – A Year in Review

It can be said without any hesitation that the year 2020 was full of surprises, rapidly changing situations, stretched deadlines, and general disarray. We kept our head low, concentrated on the tasks at hand, and continued developing the Revonte ONE Drive System for the upcoming launch in 2021.

Here’s a summary of what happened during 2020.

The Year of Revonte

A lot of things can take place within a year. This is especially true when developing a new and innovative product in a competitive environment. Steady progress and occasional challenges were accompanied with big breakthroughs and new partnerships.

Read the following list to know the essentials of Revonte in 2020.

03 March

During the first quarter of the year we announced our partnership with the innovative – even disruptive – company from the UK named EAV. Their forward-thinking concept of cargo e-bikes has set the pace for the whole industry. Cargo e-bikes solve the last-mile dilemma and EAV’s range covers every imaginable need and purpose.

Also, a story about our Drive System run on Pinkbike. If you’re interested of knowing what’ inside the Revonte Drive Unit, this is the one to read.

05 May

Simple, minimalistic, even elegant – those were some of the design goals of the Revonte Controller. We purposefully decided to go screenless with the design which leaves the final decision to the user. After all, configurability is in our DNA and the Controller is in line with that.

Instead of occupying more space from the usually crowded cockpit, we take the opposite approach. Two brake levers, and the Revonte Controller forms the complete interface between the bike and the rider. No separate trigger or shifter for the gears are needed. Less is more.

08 August

One of the many strengths of the Revonte ONE Drive System is the simple, robust and clutter-free single-speed drivetrain. Besides the traditional and time-tested chain, the Revonte ONE Drive System enables the use of a belt drive.

To answer the inquiries we built a prototype with the industry-leading Gates carbon belt.

09 September

An energy storage is needed to employ the features of the automatic and stepless features of the Revonte ONE Drive System. To make everything right from the start we decided to partner up with class-leading German battery manufacturer Akku Vision GmbH, and develop our own battery.

Meet Revonte AKKU 5 and AKKU 7. Both models share the latest Li-ion technology and physical dimensions to meet every need and price point in the market. A unique feature is the smart battery management system which makes it possible to connect up to four batteries with the combined capacity of over 2.8kWh!

10 October

Eurobike gets cancelled. First the premier event was postponed, and eventually cancelled. This was unfortunate since we had made big preparations for the upcoming show and were looking forward to it.

Revonte GmbH – a German subsidiary! To meet the demands of the European market we established a German branch to the ever-growing needs of the European e-bike market. Mr. Uwe Daniel, a long-time member of our team, was appointed as the CEO of the new company.

Cargo e-bikes are picking up and big time! An interesting development took place in a short timespan; cargo e-bikes rose to the position of becoming almost an industry leader. Our partner EAV is in the forefront of this movement and providing solutions to the challenges faced in the logistic chain. It’s not a coincidence that the Revonte ONE Drive System is the drive system of choice for cargo e-bikes.

We are looking forward to the year 2021 and we believe we aren’t the only one.

12 December

The release of the long awaited Revonte test ride video saw its premiere in December. Besides some test ride material the video included a general update of the past year.

See what’s up with the Revonte ONE Drive System by viewing the video. On that note, see you next year!

Eurobike 2019: Launch of the Revonte ONE Drive System

Eurobike took place in the first week of September in Friedrichshafen, Germany. It’s the event where the whole bike world gets together to show their latest products and visions. As usual with every major expo, plenty of gadgets and inventions with questionable utility can be found as well. To put it shortly, Eurobike was big for us, since it was our first public appearance and the event where we launched our Revonte ONE Drive System. We had set our expectations high well before the event, but those got exceeded by quite a large margin by the amount of interest our system gained!

Our booth just moments before the three-day event started.

We have Arrived at the Party

The days in Eurobike were filled with scheduled and spontaneous meetings. Our goals for the event were threefold:

1)    Start negotiations with new customers for the first deliveries in 2020.

2)    See what the rest of the industry is up to.

3)    Media coverage.

Iiro explaining the inner workings of the Revonte ONE Drive Unit.

All of the goals were met and none of our team had a boring moment during the fair. The list of contacts we made during the event produced quite a stack of paper which will surely provide plenty of work for us for the following weeks. If there’s a delay with our reply, that is the reason and please accept our apologies beforehand.

Antero and Uwe explaining the features and benefits of the Revonte ONE Drive System.

Our presence has been noted and we got daily visits by some of the biggest players in the field. It was a sign of things to come when the representatives of one very notable e-bike motor manufacturer came to our booth just half an hour later after the start of the whole event!

Not only we were noticed by the industry people, but by the media as well. A big highlight for us was that the legendary reporter Steve Jones from EMBN.com listed Revonte ONE as one of the highlights of the show! This mention meant a lot to us and we are honoured and very grateful for it.

To get the message, it’s best to hear from the source itself:

“I mean this has got to be the future of e-mountain biking. So from Finland then, Revonte is absolutely on it!”

A Long List of Unique Features

Eurobike also provided an opportunity to see what the rest of the industry is doing. Although we’re very focused on developing our product and service package, it was encouraging to see that no one else has taken the route we’re on. The Revonte ONE Drive System is still the only one with the following unique features:

  • A single-speed drivetrain. When several options exist, the simplest one usually prevails. This is especially true when it comes bicycle drivetrains. The Revonte ONE Drive System uses a single chainring, cog and durable single-speed chain, which produce a robust, low-maintenance, affordable and reliable drivetrain solution. Getting rid of the cassette and rear derailleur does good things to weight distribution and suspension characteristics in mountain bike applications.
  • Combined motor & Internal gearbox. Placing all the ´moving parts´ in one enclosed package creates a drivetrain that is care-free, functional and pleasing to the eye as well.
  • Automatic & stepless transmission. This was the feature that produced most of the questions during the show. Since bicycle transmission has been based on indexed solutions since the beginning, it can be hard to grasp the features and ride properties of a stepless version. When automatic shifting and our steady cadence mode is added to that, it’s quite a lot to take in. Our software enables the rider to use an indexed type of shifting as well which emulates the function of traditional drivetrain by dividing the gear range to the desired amount of steps.
  • Software first approach – which stands on the sturdy foundations of robust mechanical engineering. Although almost all of the existing e-bike motor systems have some type of in-built software, no one is going as far as we have. More on this below!

No Other System Goes Software First

We are taking the e-bike motor software to the next level. First of all, the ´magic´ behind the ride experience which Revonte ONE offers is based on sophisticated software that is monitoring rider inputs and other parameters (used assistance mode, velocity, battery life, etc.) with very high frequency and adjusting the output and motor behavior accordingly. It also learns from user behavior over time. Accomplishing this type of ride experience would not simply be possible with a simple electro-mechanical system.

Our app is the portal between the rider and the motor, enabling a high level of customization on the fly.

The other major feature and benefit of our system is the high level of configurability that happens on the level of bike manufacturers and end-user. Read our previous blog text to learn more.

Our goal is that bikes with Revonte ONE will get better over time. How is this possible you may ask? Via continuous, over-the-air software updates. At the moment Revonte ONE is the only one able to do this to a considerable extent because of the connectivity and the ´powerful brain´ inside the motor.

Other Major News

Our trip to Eurobike was accompanied by other good news in the form of funding. A funding round of $2 million got confirmed towards the end of the event. This sets us up nicely to start the production in the second quarter of 2020 and enables us to expand our strong and motivated team. Good things have happened, and it will only get better from here!

On an ending note, take a look at the more detailed description of Revonte ONE from EMBN.com video below.
